Adam Alter
Adam Alter is a professor of marketing and psychology at New York University's Stern School of Business. He is the author of two books, Irresistible: The Rise of Addictive Technology and the Business of Keeping Us Hooked and Drunk Tank Pink: And Other Unexpected Forces That Shape How We Think, Feel, and Behave. He is an expert on the science of addiction, the effects of technology on our behavior, and the psychology of persuasion.
Adam Alter was born and raised in Perth, Australia. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in psychology from the University of Western Australia before going on to receive a Masters in Experimental Psychology (with a focus in neurophysiology) from the University of Oxford. After completing his masters, Alter attended the University of New South Wales where he earned his PhD in neuropsychology.
Alter’s research and writing focuses on topics related to addiction, media, and marketing. His first book, Irresistible: The Rise of Addictive Technology and the Business of Keeping Us Hooked, examines the psychological and physiological effects of technology such as smartphones and social media on individuals and society as a whole. The book also provides insight into how to become more mindful when consuming technology.
Drunk Tank Pink: And Other Unexpected Forces That Shape How We Think, Feel, and Behave, Alter’s second book, focuses on understanding how the environment can shape our decisions. Alter explores how seemingly small factors, such as the color of the walls, the names of products, or the type of music playing in the background, can have a huge impact on how people act.
In addition to his books, Alter also regularly contributes to publications such as the New York Times, Scientific American, The Atlantic, The Guardian, and others. He has appeared on numerous television and radio shows, including 20/20 and the TODAY Show, and he was the first psychology professor to be appointed a TED Resident.
Alter continues to share his research and insights on addiction, media, and marketing through his work at New York University’s Stern School of Business and in lectures around the world. He is also passionate about social justice and mental health awareness, and is a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Council on Mental Health.
