Adam Tooze
Adam Tooze is one of the most important writers of the 21st century, with an impressive back-catalog of books and papers to his name. His educational background includes a degree in History and Economics from Cambridge University, and a PhD in International History from the London School of Economics. He is currently a professor at Columbia University in New York City, and an associate of the Center for International Relations at Yale University.
Adam Tooze is best known for his expertise in the economic and political history of modern Europe and the World. His first book, “The Deluge: The Great War and The Remaking of the Global Order”, won the 2016 Longman-History Today Book of the Year Award and was shortlisted for the National Book Critics Circle Award. It tells the story of the Great War and its transformation of world politics, economics, and culture.
Other among Tooze’s works include “Crashed: How a Decade of Financial Crises Changed the World.” Through this book, Tooze explores recent financial histories from Europe, the US, and beyond. He examines the forces behind the global recession of 2008 and its subsequent reverberations—from the shockwaves of austerity that Europe is only now beginning to recover from to the larger global forces that will likely shape the economic future of the 21st century. In "The Wages of Destruction: The Making and Breaking of the Nazi Economy," Tooze looks at Nazi Germany’s economic history and details how it impacted the course of the Second World War.
Adam Tooze’s latest book is “The Eye of the Sun: The Idea of Global Power in the Age of Empire." In this book, Tooze examines the development of finance and technology, looking at how that had been used to create a vision of imperial order in the 19th century. He also examines debates on imperial power and its impact on historical events in the Middle East and elsewhere.
In addition to writing books, Adam Tooze is an established public commentator. He writes for a variety of publications, often focusing on international politics and economics, and the future of the European Union. He has written for publications such as The New York Times, The Guardian, and Harvard Business Review. He also regularly comments on various radio and TV shows, including the BBC’s “Newsnight” and Sky News’s “The Pledge.”
Adam Tooze’s books offer readers a unique perspective on the history and politics of modern Europe and its global implications. Through in-depth analysis and comprehensive research, Tooze reveals a deeper understanding of the significant economic, political, and cultural forces that shape our world.
