Adrien Bourgogne
Adrien Bourgogne is an emerging French author who has quickly become known for his thought-provoking and imaginative stories. His works explore complex themes from the perspective of young people living in the modern world. His writing often takes readers on a journey, which speaks to our own experiences in life.
Adrien, appointed recipient of the Prix du roman défenseur des droits de l'enfance (Child Rights Award) in 2020, was born in Paris and grew up in the northern suburbs of Aulnay-sous-Bois. Before dedicating himself to writing, Adrien studied and worked as a photographer and a journalist in the French and Spanish press. After several years of traveling, he embraced French culture and identity, which he brings to his work.
Adrien's first novel, Les Invisibles, was critically acclaimed upon its release in 2014. The compelling story follows a group of young Parisians who struggle with their personal and social identities, their family dynamics, and their place in society. Adrien adeptly captures the feelings of alienation, uncertainty, and powerlessness felt by young people in today's world. In his work, he explores the consequences of poverty, racism, mental health, and sexual orientation.
Adrien has since written numerous novels and short-story collections, such as Éloge des rouages (2016) and La Vague aveugle (2018). These works are characterized by their rich atmosphere and raw emotion, which serve as a source of insight into the human condition. Adrien's stories often delve into the themes of family, identity, self-discovery, loyalty, betrayal, and love.
In 2018, Adrien published Son absence, a powerful novel that explores the relationship between a father and his daughter after the death of her elder sister. Adrien's writing is unsparingly honest and emotive, painting a brutally sincere portrait of grief.
In 2020, Adrien was awarded the Prix du roman défenseur des droits de l'enfance for his novel Aux bras des autres. The novel tells the story of a displaced Haitian woman who finds herself in France, feeling isolated and alone. Adrien sensitively reveals how her displacement has impacted her emotional and psychological wellbeing, and how she perseveres to find a sense of belonging.
In his own words, Adrien is driven by a “thirst for justice and beauty.” His writing provides insight into the lives of ordinary people and illuminates the common experiences and struggles shared by many. He is an inspiring author whose stories make us reflect on our own lives and our place in the world.
