Agnes Smedley

Agnes Smedley, who wrote under the pen name Clem Edwards, was an American writer, journalist, and feminist who was closely associated with the Communist Party. She was born in Missouri in 1892 and spent the early years of her life moving frequently due to her father's military career. Agnes Smedley returned to America in 1938, and continued to write about progressive causes. Her novel, The Great Road: The Life of Chan Sheng-Chu (1963), is considered to be one of her greatest works. It details the story of a Chinese peasant-turned-revolutionary who played a significant role in the Chinese Communist Revolution. During the 1940s, she worked on a biography of Mao Zedong. It was never completed, but her papers are now kept at Stanford University.

In her later years, Agnes Smedley was an outspoken advocate for freedom of speech. She is known as one of the most influential writers and activists of the 20th century. Her works, which focused extensively on modern politics, social class, and gender issues, are highly regarded to this day.
