Alexander Osterwalder

Alexander Osterwalder is a Swiss business strategist, consultant, and author of the best-selling business books The Business Model Canvas and Business Model Generation. He is widely recognized as a pioneer in business innovation, allowing companies to rapidly create and implement new solutions and service models. Osterwalder’s books have been translated into over thirty different languages and have sold over a million copies worldwide.

Osterwalder is an alumnus of the University of Geneva, where he earned his degree in business engineering in 1999. In 2003, he earned his doctorate from HEC Lausanne. After graduating from college, Osterwalder spent the next several years working in various roles in the technology and consulting industries. He founded a consulting firm focused on helping corporate clients create innovative solutions for their industries, and has since advised some of the world’s leading companies on their business model strategies.

In 2005, Osterwalder developed the groundbreaking business model canvas tool. This tool is a visual representation of a company’s business model that helps entrepreneurs to brainstorm, visualize, and develop their business ideas. Additionally, the tool allows executives to quickly analyze and evaluate the potential of their strategies and service offerings. Osterwalder’s work on the business model canvas was initially published in the book Business Model Generation in 2010. This book explores the different elements of the business model canvas and provides a framework for creating and implementing new business models. The book also offers guidance on how to use the business model canvas to create value propositions, analyze competition, and innovate.

In addition to his teaching and consulting roles, Osterwalder is also an avid entrepreneur. He co-founded two successful start-up companies and has since moved on to become CEO of the online business model analysis platform, Strategyzer. This platform allows users to adopt and modify the business model canvas and to test different business model designs and simulations. Additionally, Strategyzer offers a range of online-courses and online mentoring programs to help entrepreneurs make the most of the business model canvas.

In recent years, Osterwalder has become an increasingly sought-after speaker and consultant. He has lectured at various prestigious institutions and has collaborated with some of the biggest companies in the world. In 2013, Osterwalder was named one of the “Top 50 Business Thinkers in the World” by the Guardian. He has since authored another book, co-authored with Yves Pigneur entitled, Business Model You: A One-Page Method for Reinventing Your Career.
