Andrew Tanzer

Andrew Tanzer is a renowned author from the United States of America. He was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1963 and currently lives in Austin, Texas. He is best known for his writing in the genres of fantasy, science fiction, alternative history and speculative fiction.

His journey as an author started with the novel, ‘Breathing Underwater', which was published in 1998. The book is about a mermaid who is trying to make a difficult transition from the sea to the human world. It received positive reviews from critics and garnered numerous awards, including the prestigious Locus Award and HarperCollins Publishers Fiction Prize.

After the success of ‘Breathing Underwater',Tanzer wrote several more novels, which gained critical and commercial acclaim. These include 'The Final Solution' (2001), 'The Flight of Michael McBride' (2002), and 'The Son of the Stars' (2005).

His three most famous works are ‘The Clockwork Universe’ (2008), ‘Lords of the Sky’ (2011) and ‘The Golden Age of Tomorrow’ (2014). The Clockwork Universe is an alternative history set in the 18th century, in which the Enlightenment has been replaced by clockwork automata and magic. Lords of the Sky is a science-fiction novel about a group of interplanetary travelers seeking survival in an unpredictable universe. The Golden Age of Tomorrow is a fantasy, set in a future where technology has all but eliminated human problems.

Most of his books are set in worlds of endless possibilities, where science and magics co-exist. He often uses the concept of a ‘five element’ wheel to put us into a fantastical world in which creation, destruction and experimentation are coexistent. He also takes inspiration from mythology and adds a spiritualistic quality to his writing, often taking a journey with his characters as they travel into uncharted lands filled with adventure and discovery.

Aside from his work as a novelist, Tanzer has also contributed short stories to various books and anthologies. He has co-edited anthologies such as the ‘The Fantasy Hall of Fame’ and was a contributing editor to the magazine ‘Fantasy & Science Fiction’. He has even written columns for science fiction conventions.
