Anthea Roberts is an Australian author whose work focuses on the intersection of law, culture, and international relations. She is known for writing books that explore gender relations, global justice, and technological changes to the world order.
Roberts was born in Melbourne, Australia and obtained degrees in law and anthropology at both the University of Melbourne and the University of New South Wales. She then went on to obtain her JD from the University of Michigan and her PhD in International Law from Cornell University. Roberts has written numerous books, including her award-winning The Age of Responsibility: Luck, Law, and Logics of chance (Harvard University Press, 2015); a collection of essays that examine the perplexing problem of global responsibility and how it is affected by technology and shifting legal regimes.
Her book, Is International Law International? (Cambridge University Press, 2021) examines the legal debates around what constitutes an international action and the implications of this debate for real-world problems. Roberts argues that due to the increasing importance of global governance and rule of law, it is necessary to establish legal accountability and responsibility at an international level.
Her other works include The Infrastructural Turn: Networks, Rules, Democracy (Oxford University Press, 2020) and International Law in International Society (Oxford University Press, 2018). In these books, Roberts explores the tensions that arise when nation-states attempt to manage the global order within international law. She argues that in order to create more effective and just international rules, it is important to recognize the agency of non-state actors and the need for increased democratic accountability.
In addition to her scholarly works, Roberts also contributes regularly to international law reviews as well as global media outlets. Her writings have appeared in The New York Times, The Guardian, The BBC and Al Jazeera, among other outlets.
Overall, Anthea Roberts is a prominent figure in the international law world, and her work has shed important light on some of the most pressing problems of our time, from climate change to technological transformations. Her work has had a major impact on how international law is discussed and understood, and her book is essential reading for all those interested in the state of global governance.
