Ben Carson

Ben Carson is an American author and retired neurosurgeon. He is best known for his work as a professor of neurosurgery, oncology, plastic surgery, and pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. He was a Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient and author of several books.

Carson was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1951 to Robert and Sonya Carson. His mother was a domestic worker, and his father was a Baptist minister. He was raised in poverty, but with a strong faith in God, Carson eventually surpassed his parents’ expectations and began to excel in school.

He attended the University of Michigan where he studied psychology and became interested in medicine. He continued his studies at Yale. After graduating from Yale in 1973, Carson graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School and completed his residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1977.

Carson began at the John Hopkins hospital in 1984, eventually becoming the director of Pediatric Neurosurgery in 1985. He became an internationally renowned neurosurgeon and did work in delicate surgical procedures that separated twins conjoined at the head–unsuccessfully. He also worked on a procedure where a brain-tumor was removed from a 15-year-old girl. In 1990, he became the youngest physician to be awarded the Congressionally authorized Spingarn Medal, a recognition of outstanding achievement. By the age of 33 he was appointed the Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins.

Carson was a highly sought-after speaker, appearing before dignitaries and audiences around the world. He was a part of a debate panel at the National Prayer Breakfast in 1997. At the event, he criticized the current state of welfare and national health care in the United States. As a result, President Clinton invited him to the White House to discuss his ideas on health reforms.

He has authored several books, three of which are memoirs. His first book, Gifted Hands, was published in 1996 and tells the story of his life until that point. It became a bestseller, inspiring a made-for-television movie of the same name. His second book, Take the Risk, was published in 2008. This book discusses the importance of taking risks in order to reach one’s fullest potential. In 2012, his third memoir Think Big was published. This book is a reflection on his success and the lessons he has learned throughout his life.

Carson retired from Johns Hopkins in 2013 and currently works as a speaker, endorsing issues surrounding education and health care. He ran for president in the 2016 Republican presidential primaries but dropped out of the race in March 2016. He has been awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and Doctor of Science for his accomplishments. Carson is currently living in Florida, working on his charity, the Carson Scholars Fund.

In conclusion, Ben Carson has overcome tremendous odds to become one of the most respected and revered medical professionals in the country. His accomplishments and his ability to affect change in the medical field are a testament to how far a person can go when they are passionate and determined to succeed.
