Benjamin Graham
Benjamin Graham is one of the most renowned and influential authors in Finance and Investment. He is frequently referred to as the “Father of Value Investing”, and his philosophies are a cornerstone of contemporary investing culture. Graham’s pioneering insight, emphasizing the importance of value investing, was initially outlined in his seminal work, Security Analysis. This work, along with his follow-up masterpiece, The Intelligent Investor, has provided a lasting foundation that continues to propel the growth of the value investing movement.
Graham was born in London, England in 1894. He was always a bright student, often teaching himself difficult topics in school while excelling in mathematics and Latin. After immigrating to America with his family in 1902, Graham enrolled at Columbia University, where he graduated in 1914 with the highest honors.
Graham quickly began applying his mathematical methods to Wall Street investments - methods which were expressed in Security Analysis when it was first published in 1934. This first edition of Security Analysis largely focused on value investing principles, which advocate long-term investment strategies that emphasize security and the best way to identify undervalued (low price) securities on the stock market.
The principles outlined in Security Analysis revolutionized the way people thought about investing. His sound advice and strong intuition told investors not only when to purchase stock, but when to sell at a profit. Graham’s focus on value investing is still utilized by investors today.
Following the success of Security Analysis, Graham wrote The Intelligent Investor in 1949, which remains one of the most widely read books on investing. In this book, Graham developed a rational approach to stock selection that involved balancing risk and reward. He also outlined the principles of “Margin of Safety”, where investors should buy stocks at prices significantly lower than their estimated value and “Mr. Market”, his metaphor to represent the fluctuations of securities markets over time.
Among his contemporaries, Graham was recognized as an informal “mentor” to Warren Buffett, arguably one of the most successful investors of all time. Buffett, alongside a long list of successful investors, follow Graham’s advice that investment is a “paradox of value” and should involve a mix of savvy stock analysis, risk management, and psychology.
Beyond his famous writings, Graham wrote a number of academic papers that are considered modern-day classics. He was also a lecturer, teacher, and professor of finance at the University of California, Los Angeles and a lecturer at the Graduate School of Business of Columbia University. Graham’s works and teachings have resonated over several decades and will continue to inspire investors for generations to come.
In short, Benjamin Graham was a legend in the investment world, influencing generations of individuals and entire financial movements with his intellect, insight, and contribution to the field of finance. His books Security Analysis and The Intelligent Investor are widely respected and their influence can still be seen in the modern markets. Graham’s life and work set him apart as one of the most important figures in the world of finance and investing.
