Blanton was born in Winchester, VA, in 1942 to a religious family. He dropped out of school at 16 and became a long-haul truck driver. Blanton was greatly influenced by his experience driving long distances and had plenty of time for contemplation and insight. From this experience, he developed a deep understanding of human nature, which eventually evolved into his own personal philosophy of life.
Blanton obtained his Ph.D. in 1978 from Nova University, majoring in Counseling and Human Development. By this point, he had already started his own business were he taught people how to live more meaningful lives. He taught these principles through weekend seminars, which eventually became the basis for his book, Radical Honesty.
The main point that Blanton focuses on in Radical Honesty is that we are all far more honest with ourselves than we think. He encourages his readers to be true to themselves, and to be honest with each other, in order to grow and become more fulfilled individuals. Blanton emphasizes that even when being honest hurts and makes us uncomfortable, we should do it anyway. According to Blanton, only by being honest with ourselves and with others can we exist in a space of true serenity and joy.
The book also looks at the different types of relationships that people form and how these relationships can be improved with Radical Honesty. He encourages readers to consider the impact their actions have on those around them and to think about how things could have been done differently in order to create a more favorable outcome.
In 1994, Blanton published a revised edition of Radical Honesty, which included a new chapter entitled “Staying in Love". This chapter explores the concepts of commitment, self-discipline, and courage, and how all of these things relate to the success of maintaining relationships. He also emphasizes the importance of learning how to forgive oneself, as well as how to forgive and recover from hurts caused by those closest to us.
Blanton has also written two other books, Practicing Radical Honesty, which provides a comprehensive how-to guide to living a more honest life; and Reality Therapy, which focuses on how individuals can use their own agency to live a more fulfilling life.
Blanton has been featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal and numerous other publications, in addition to appearing on various podcasts and radio programs. He has also been a guest speaker and commentator for various television networks and lecture series.
