Bukkyo Dendo Kyokai
Bukkyo Dendo Kyokai (BDK) is an important figure in the world of Buddhist literature. Founded in 1961 in Tokyo, BDK has been a major source of Buddhist writings and teachings in both Japan and other parts of the world. This Japanese non-profit organisation boasts of being one of the largest missionary content providers and publishers in history.
By sharing Buddhist teachings and writings with individuals, BDK helps to enrich the lives of both its readers and those of the general public. Many of their works include writings by the Mahayana and Pali schools of Buddhism, although they do also publish works from other sects such as the Zen, Nichiren, and Vajrayana. Along with the many writings they offer, BDK also publishes extensive commentaries, translations, and teachings from Buddhist texts.
In addition to providing quality Buddhist writings, BDK offers several different ways for its readers to connect with the teaching of Buddhism. The organization hosts lectures and Dharma talks throughout the world, and has honed in on the practice of international Buddhist culture exchange. In addition to the in-person meetings, BDK also offers an extensive online presence with many discussions taking shap on cyber forums, including their website, YouTube channels, and blogs.
Outside of sharing the teachings of Buddha, BDK is also a leading publisher in topics related to Japanese history and culture. With works related to Japanese culture such as “The Essential Kyoto – A Travel Guide” and “Buddha Sutra: a Modern Adaptation”, readers can gain a wealth of knowledge on the history and traditions of Japan.
Over the decades, BDK has become a well-known and respected publisher of Buddhist teachings and translations. BDK employs a staff of both native and non-native Japanese who are knowledgeable in the history, philosophy and practice of the Buddhist way of life. In addition to the monthly magazine, the organization has released numerous books and translation works, as well as numerous audio works. With these resources, BDK serves as a bridge for understanding between cultures and helping spread the teachings of the Buddha and his followers.
Despite the hundreds of texts available through BDK, what is most remarkable about the organization is the spirit of generosity and dedication that drives its members and contributors. Over the years, BDK’s members have personally funded the operations of the organization in order to continue spreading the teachings of the Buddha, without expecting anything in return.
It is this spirit of kindness and commitment which makes the Bukkyo Dendo Kyokai a very special organization. With its messages of faith, insight, and wisdom, BDK has become an important voice in the global Buddhist community. Whether it be through their books and translations, lectures, or online presence, BDK works diligently to share the teaching of Buddhism and how it can better the lives of both its readers and those of the general public.
