Carol Dweck
Carol Dweck is an internationally renowned author, psychologist and Stanford University professor who is best known for her groundbreaking research on the psychology of motivation. She has written multiple books on the topic, including the best-selling book "Mindset: The New Psychology of Success," which has been published in 30 languages around the world.
The basis for Dweck’s research is the concept of “mindset” -- the belief that everybody has different ways of approaching challenges and that one’s behavior and responses are influenced by the internal belief systems they’ve adopted. As a cognitive psychologist at Columbia University, Dweck conducted extensive research into how the belief systems of students determined their achievement and motivation.
After studying hundreds of students, Dweck determined there were two ‘mindsets’ - a “growth” mindset and a “fixed” mindset. In her book “Mindset”, Dweck explains the core difference between these two mindsets is how individuals view their abilities. Those with a fixed mindset believe that intelligence and talent are fixed traits, whereas those with a growth mindset believe that abilities and skills can be improved with hard work and dedication.
Dweck’s research demonstrated how one’s mindset impacts their behavior in many different areas, from school to relationships and even career choices. Those with a growth mindset are more likely to take risks, seek feedback and view failure as a learning opportunity. By contrast, those with a fixed mindset typically give up easily when confronted with a challenge and shy away from failure.
The idea of having a growth mindset has become increasingly popular, with Dweck’s book and research influencing organizations, schools and parents worldwide. Her book has been translated into 30 languages and is available in many countries around the world.
Dweck has also published several books on topics related to the power of mindset, such as “Self-Theories” which explains how beliefs about oneself shape lives; “Brainology” which encourages kids to develop a growth mindset; and “Mindset Works” which provides readers with tools and exercises for creating a growth mindset.
Beyond her work on mindset, Dweck has conducted research on a range of topics, including self-control, relationships, creativity and the effects of gossip. Her work has been featured in multiple scientific journals and books, as well as popular magazines and newspapers such as TIME, The New York Times and The Washington Post.
Carol Dweck has spent the majority of her career at Stanford University and has received countless awards and recognition for her work. She is often consulted by leading business executives and educational institutions, as well as parents and teachers, as they look to understand the role of mindset in success, motivation and achievement.
Carol Dweck’s extensive research into the psychology of motivation has revolutionized both the academic and business worlds. Her books, articles and research have encouraged readers of all ages and backgrounds to develop a growth mindset and appreciate the power of challenge and effort.
