Charles Dickens

Charles Dickens is widely regarded as one of the greatest authors of all time. He wrote some of the most popular novels of the 19th century, and his work continues to remain timeless and widely loved today.

Born in Portsmouth in 1812, Charles Dickens had a difficult upbringing; his family struggled financially, and at 12 his father was sent to prison for debt. In order to support the family, he was forced to give up school and find a job in a boot-blacking factory where he worked in miserable conditions from the early morning until late at night. This experience would later become a major influence in his writing.

When his father was released from prison, Charles returned to school and found success in writing and publishing, producing some of his best-loved works in the next years, such as the Christmas novella A Christmas Carol, published in 1843.

Dickens’s books are seen as unique because he was able to capture the social atmosphere of the times through his characters, providing insight into the lives of the Victorian poor and working classes. He wrote honestly and without sentiment, exploring issues such as child labour, and wrote satirically about the legal and political systems of his time.

In addition to his novels, Dickens also wrote short stories, essays, and plays. His most famous stories are perhaps Oliver Twist and Great Expectations. Oliver Twist is a tragic tale of the young orphan, Oliver, and the dark side of the criminal underworld portrayed in London in the 19th century. Great Expectations is the story of Pip, a young orphan, and his rise from poverty to become a gentleman, with the help of a mysterious benefactor.

The influence of Charles Dickens continues to be felt in popular culture today. Many of his books have been adapted for film and television, and feature prominently in literary curriculums in schools all over the world. He also had a huge impact on the English language, bringing new words and phrases such as ‘Great Expectations’ and ‘the Best of Times’ into common usage.

In addition, his advocacy of children’s rights and his criticism of the social inequities of the 19th century have had great influence in both literature and politics. His legacy continues to inspire and influence writers and readers to this day.
