Charles M. Blow

Charles M. Blow

Charles M. Blow is a New York Times columnist and acclaimed author who has spent the past several decades of his career writing passionately about racism and the state of American politics. He is best known for his powerful and thought-provoking columns about race relations and civil rights, though he has also written extensively about national politics, the need for equity in policing and the Black Lives Matter movement.

Blow grew up in a small rural town in Louisiana in the segregated 1960s. During his formative years, he was heavily influenced by the civil rights struggle and the speeches of Martin Luther King Jr. He attended Grambling State University, earning a degree in mass communication. Following graduation, he became a warehouse manager in Marshall, Texas. It was during this time that Blow began to seriously consider a career in journalism.

In 1994, Blow landed a gig as a graphics editor on the staff of The New York Times. After 7 years, he was promoted to the op-ed page and became one of the first African-American columnists in the paper’s history. His columns quickly began to draw attention, as he wrote passionately and unapologetically about issues of race and politics.

It wasn’t long before Blow published his first book, Fire Shut Up In My Bones, in 2014. This was a deeply intimate and moving memoir about growing up in the South and his struggle to find his identity and purpose in life. In it, he reflects on how the racism and poverty he experienced as a child shaped his views on life and his commitment to fighting for justice and racial equality. One of the themes Blow repeatedly emphasizes in the book is that, in order to make meaningful progress, we must learn to look beyond surface-level differences and embrace our common humanity.

In 2016, Blow published his next major work The Devil You Know: A Black Power Manifesto. In this book, he continues to reflect on his life’s journey and explores the challenges the African American community currently faces. He passionately argues that we need to create a new and better system of politics and civic engagement in order to build a more equitable world that allows everyone the opportunity to thrive.

Blow is currently working on his third and yet-unnamed book, which is expected to be released in 2021. He has also published a number of prominent columns for The New York Times, including his widely read “Biographical Sketch” series which highlights the efforts of prominent African Americans across different fields. This series earned him a Pulitzer Prize nomination and a National Association of Black Journalists Journalist of the Year award.

A tireless activist and advocate for equality, Charles M. Blow has proven himself as a powerful and influential voice on the issues of race, civil rights and politics. His inspiring writing and activism have left a lasting impact and will undoubtedly continue to inspire countless readers and citizens for years to come.
