Chip Walter

Chip Walter is a renowned American journalist and science communicator who has brought fascinating stories to life with his books, articles, research and travels. His works have been featured in The New York Times, National Geographic, Scientific American and many others. He is the author of six books exploring science, art, and humanity that span from the edge of the universe to the depths of the human soul.

Chip Walter was born in Ithaca, New York in 1957. He studied journalism at Syracuse University, graduating in 1979. He began his career as a reporter for The Ithaca Journal, then for the northern edition of The New York Times. He later joined National Geographic and his articles appeared in the magazine for nearly two decades.

Walter has written a number of books, including The Jupiter Path (2010), Thumbs Up: The Quest to Arms, Legs, and a Heart (2011), and Hubble's Universe: Greatest Discoveries and Latest Images (2017). His most recent, Eternal Life: A New Vision, was voted 2019's Best Health and Medical Journalism in Italy, where it is also required reading in medical schools and universities.

Walter’s other works include a play, a psychodrama, science fiction novels, and he has also served as a consultant for a number of newspapers and magazines. His work and travel have taken him to some of the most fascinating places on the globe, from remote Arctic settlements to the craters in the Amazon.

The Jupiter Path, one of Walter’s most beloved and acclaimed works, recounts the story of a journey to planets and moons in the outer solar system to seek the meaning of life. The story is told through the eyes of the main character, a space traveler in search of answers, and the inhabitants of these distant worlds.

Thumbs Up: The Quest to Arms, Legs, and a Heart is a tale of an 18-year-old man's quest for prostheses and the struggles he faces to gain back the use of his limbs. His journey takes him to Africa, Japan, and the Caribbean where he meets other people with similar struggles.

Another book, Hubble’s Universe: Greatest Discoveries and Latest Images, includes stunning pictures and expert commentary as Walter takes readers on a journey through space to explore the mysteries of the universe.
