Chris Whipple

Chris Whipple is an American author and journalist whose works cover a wide range of topics from politics to history. He has worked as the chief White House correspondent for CBS News and the editor-at-large for Bloomberg News. His books about the White House, and about the CIA and FBI, have won numerous awards.

Chris Whipple was born in 1967, in Arkansas. He received his bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Missouri in 1989. After graduation, he started his career at the staff of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, where he worked from 1989 to 1992. In 1993, he moved to Washington, D.C., where he joined the staff of US News & World Report. During his four years at the magazine, he worked as the national security editor, writer, and reporter.

In 1997, Whipple was appointed the White House correspondent for CBS News. His tenure in this position ran for five years, until 2002. During this time, he reported on the historic visits of former President Clinton to Kosovo, Cuba and Northern Ireland, as well as his negotiations with China and Russia.

Whipple left CBS News in 2002, and became an editor-at-large for Bloomberg News. His main focus was national security issues, but he also wrote about politics, economics, and the media. In 2012, Chris Whipple left Bloomberg News and became the president and CEO of the public relations firm MediaDC.

One of Whipple’s most noteworthy works is his 2017 book, The Gatekeepers: How the White House Chiefs of Staff Define Every Presidency. The book offers an inside look at how the most powerful position in the federal government has influenced the decisions, strategies, and successes or failures of the past nine presidents. Whipple reveals the details and stories of each of the chiefs of staff who served under Presidents Nixon, Carter, Reagan, George HW Bush, Clinton, George W. Bush and Obama. He examines the relationship between the President and his Chief of Staff, while revealing the unknown inner workings of the Oval Office. The Gatekeepers won a 2018 Peabody Award and was a finalist for the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction.

In addition to writing books, Whipple is also a consultant and a sought-after speaker. He has been a consultant to HBO’s The Newsroom and to the popular Netflix show House of Cards. He serves as the Chief Political & Policy Strategist for the It Starts Today campaign, a platform to promote political reform, as well as an advisory board member for the Newseum Institute. He is also a frequent guest on CNN, MSNBC, and other news networks.
