Christopher Ryan
Christopher Ryan is an American author and psychotherapist best known for his bestselling book Sex at Dawn: How We Mate, Why We Stray, and What It Means for Modern Relationships. Published in 2010, the book has been translated into 25 languages and has become a wildly popular, bestselling book in countries all over the world.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio on March 3, 1968, Ryan graduated from Cleveland State University in 1991 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s in clinical psychology. He went on to specialize in the treatment of trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder, and earned a Ph.D. in counseling psychology from the University of Southern California in 2002.
Since then, Ryan has become an acclaimed psychotherapist and teacher, traveling around the world to speak and teach on the topics of sexuality, intimacy and relationships. He has offered lectures and workshops at universities all over the world, including Stanford, UC Berkeley, Harvard, Cambridge, and the London School of Economics.
In addition to his career as a psychotherapist, Ryan is an accomplished writer. His most acclaimed work is, of course, Sex at Dawn, which delves into many sensitive topics such as sex, monogamy, and human evolution. He argues that humans have evolved to be primarily monogamous, but that we struggle with it because of ingrained evolutionary instincts.
Ryan is also the co-author of New York Times bestseller, Civilized to Death: The Price of Progress. He co-wrote this book with his wife, medical anthropologist Cacilda Jethá. The book discusses how modern civilization has changed the human diet and lifestyle so drastically that our bodies and brains have yet to adjust.
Apart from his professional work, Ryan is also the host of a popular podcast, The Real, which he launched in 2018. The show focuses on conversations about sex, relationships, and health literacy. He features guests from all over the world who come on to discuss various topics related to sexuality and modern-day relationships.
