Daniel James Brown is an author and storyteller whose works have been heralded by readers as inspiring, captivating, and well-researched. The acclaimed author was born in 1955 in Cleveland, Ohio and grew up in Wichita, Kansas. Brown attended high school at Wichita North High. After graduating high school, he attended Cornell University where he earned his bachelor's degree in English and studied for a Masters degree in Folklore. After graduating from Cornell, Brown moved to Seattle and worked as a freelance writer and editor before beginning his writing career.

Brown's first book, Under a Flaming Sky, was a work of historical fiction based on the story of the Great Hinckley Fire of 1894. It was published in 2006 and went on to win the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Award. The novel was praised for its compelling and detailed narrative, as well as its accurate and imaginative retelling of a little-known yet powerful event.

His second novel, The Indifferent Stars Above, was released in 2009 and was based on the story of the ill-fated Donner Party, which has become an iconic part of American history. Brown spent four years researching and writing the story, interviewing dozens of descendants of the Donner Party and other witnesses to the tragedy and working with archivists, historians, and scientists to recreate the events in vivid detail.

In 2012, Brown released his most famous work, The Boys in the Boat. The text tells the story of nine intrepid university rowers from Washington State who made their nation proud by becoming Olympic champions during Adolf Hitler's 1936 games in Berlin. It was hailed as "a dramatic account of a heroic, forgotten chapter in Olympic history" by The Wall Street Journal. The Boys in the Boat was a phenomenal success and reached the New York Times Best Seller list for fifteen weeks. It won the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Award and was selected by Amazon as its Best Book of the Year.

Brown's latest novel, The River of Doubt, was published in 2014 and recounts the expedition of Theodore Roosevelt and his entourage as they travel down an unmapped section of the Amazon River. In the narrative, Brown explores the perils encountered by the group, as well as the tale of their eventual rescue from the expedition's most desperate, perilous moment.
