Daniel Keyes
Daniel Keyes is best known as the author of the novel Flowers for Algernon, one of the most popular and influential science fiction books of all time. The novel, first published in 1959, tells the story of a mentally disabled man who undergoes an experimental procedure to increase his intelligence.
Daniel Keyes was born in 1927 and grew up in Brooklyn, New York. He was an avid reader and loved science fiction. In 1944, he joined the United States Navy and served until 1946. After his military service, he went on to study English at Brooklyn College, where he graduated in 1950.
In 1955, he wrote his first novel, Flowers for Algernon. It was first published in the form of a short story in the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. The novel was later published as a book in 1959 and gained great success, becoming a bestseller and winning the Hugo Award for Best Novel.
Flowers for Algernon is an exploration of intelligence and its relation to happiness and personal fulfillment. The story follows the protagonist, Charlie Gordon, a mentally disabled man who undergoes an experimental procedure to increase his intelligence. As Charlie’s intelligence increases, his understanding of himself and the world around him grows, allowing him to experience a range of emotions and come to terms with his past.

His other works include The Minds of Billy Milligan (1981), a novel about a man with multiple personalities, and The Touch (2002), a science-fiction book about telepathy. Throughout his career, Keyes also wrote numerous short stories, non-fiction essays and scripts for television shows such as “Star Trek” and “The Twilight Zone”.
Daniel Keyes passed away in 2014 at the age of 86. He will always be remembered as one of the the great authors of science fiction and his work will continue to inspire readers for years to come. His classic book, Flowers for Algernon, is a timeless exploration of intelligence and its power to shape our lives for the better.
