Darrell Mullis

Darrell Mullis has been publishing successful fiction since he made his publishing debut in 2006. He has written novels in a variety of genres, ranging from young adult to fantasy to contemporary romance.

Born in Raleigh, North Carolina, Mullis grew up with an interest in reading, writing, and exploring the realms of fantasy, science fiction, and horror. His early work was mainly speculative, exploring the fantastical and strange, but his later work often has a more realistic slant. By the time he graduated from high school, he had authored several novels and novellas, some of which were published.

Afterwards, Mullis attended Duke University, where he earned a degree in literature and creative writing. While there, he won multiple awards for his work, including the Robert Penn Warren Prize for Fiction.

Upon graduation from Duke, Mullis decided to pursue his career as a full-time writer of fiction. He has since published a total of nine novels, two short story collections, and a play. He has also had short stories featured in numerous anthologies and magazines.

Mullis’s first novel, Mourning Songs, was published in 2006. It follows the story of a young boy who discovers mysterious woods behind his home. In the woods, he meets a strange and alluring woman who captivates him. The novel, while fraught with danger, is also a lyrical exploration of longing, grief, and love. It has since become a cult classic and has been adapted into a movie and video game.

Mullis’s second novel, The Wolf and the Red Balloon, was released in 2008. It follows the story of two children who find a balloon and send wishes to the moon. When their wish is granted in a magical way, they are inadvertently led on an adventure. The book explores themes of grief, trust, and teamwork. It has also been adapted into a feature film.

The Road to Nowhere, a contemporary fantasy novel, was published in 2011, and was perhaps Mullis’s most successful work. The novel follows the story of teenage twins who must make a treacherous journey to the mysterious world that lies beneath their town’s surface. They are aided by a motley crew of fantastical creatures, and the novel features themes of coming of age, loss, and redemption. It was a finalist for the Nebula Award for Best Novel and was a Goodreads Choice Award nominee.

Mullis’s most recent novel, Witchwood, was released in 2016 and is his most ambitious work to date. The novel follows the story of protagonist Romeo St. Clair as he attempts to save the magical world of Witchwood from destruction. It is a thrilling and thoughtful exploration of identity, community, and evil.

Darrell Mullis continues to tell stories that eagerly delight and surprise with their unpredictable plot twists, captivating characters, and bewitching atmospheres. His works explore the unknown and seek to satisfy readers’ appetites for the fantastical. He is sure to have more surprises up his sleeve.
