He has a Bachelor’s degree from Syracuse University, a Master’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania, and a Docterate in Psychology from Harvard University. For more than 35 years, Pillemer has lectured and conducted research in numerous fields of developmental science, including adult development and aging, adolescence, child development, and intergenerational relations. During his time at universities such as Dartmouth College, Duke University, and the University of California, Davis, Pillemer conducted groundbreaking research exploring intergenerational connections and the relationship between experiences in adolescence and adulthood. His empirical research showed how important experiences during the teenage years are for long-term psychological development, health and wellbeing.
Pillemer’s most well-known book is “Insights from the Past: An Introduction to Developmental Psychology.” It is a comprehensive introduction to the field of developmental psychology and provides readers with a broad understanding of how lifelong development affects psychological wellbeing. Specifically, the book examines the factors that affect people’s growth and identifies the elements that are often overlooked in developmental psychology. It covers topics such as the importance of context and culture for development, how to cultivate meaningful relationships, and how our experiences shape our emotional landscape.
Pillemer has also co-authored a book with his colleague, Robert L. Kahn, titled “Meaningful Aging: The Game Plan.” This book explores aging and its effect on psychological wellbeing and health. The authors recognize the emotional disconnect between adults and their younger counterparts and stress the importance of relationships at any age. They also provide tips and strategies to help readers live a meaningful life as they age.
Pillemer’s book “Life Lessons: What We Can Learn From the Elders” is his most popular book so far. Drawing on years of empirical research and the contributions of elders from all walks of society, the book draws out the successes and setbacks to growing old gracefully. It gives readers an eye-opening look into important issues such as life transitions, relationship dynamics, and legacies.
David B. Pillemer’s writing is unique in that it captures the life experiences of others in incredible detail and clarity. His books provide readers with practical guidance to help them lead a productive and meaningful life. He has also made great strides in research, providing vital insights into a range of topics that had not been explored thoroughly before. Ultimately, readers will benefit from the accumulation of his work over the years and find comfort in knowing they are not alone in their struggles and successes.
