David Benioff
David Benioff is a renowned American author and screenplay writer whose expansive body of work has made him one of the most beloved authors on the modern literary scene. He is best known for his novels, City of Thieves and, The 25th Hour, as well as for writing and creating the HBO series Game of Thrones.
David Benioff was born on September 25th, 1970 in New York City, and grew up near Princeton, NJ. He attended Dartmouth College and graduated in 1992 before going on to receive his MFA from the University of California, Irvine. He got his start as an intern writer at Vanity Fair and like many writers, also worked as a teacher at Hunter College.
His debut novel, 25th Hour, was a New York Times notable book when published in 2001, and turned into a movie directed by Spike Lee in 2003, featuring Morgan Freeman and Edward Norton. His subsequent novel, City of Thieves, was critically acclaimed and won a Quill Award.
Benioff has also worked as an acclaimed screenplay writer, starting off co-writing the Troy in 2004, starring Brad Pit and Eric Bana. After this success, more screenplay writing jobs followed, such as X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Playing for Keeps.
Most notably, as co-creator, co-producer, head writer and showrunner of the HBO series Game of Thrones, Benioff and his partner, D.B. Weiss, attracted widespread acclaim and worldwide attention for the show’s complex storylines, complex moral arguments, and pathos-driven character arcs. The show swept the Emmy Awards in 2018 for its seventh season, with Benioff and Weiss personally nabbing four nominations for Outstanding Writing in a Drama Series.
