David Lampe
David Lampe is an award-winning author and illustrator, renowned for his illustrations and captivating stories. He has written and illustrated several critically acclaimed books, many of which explore unique topics such as science fiction, fantasy, horror, and mystery. His work has inspired generations of aspiring writers and illustrators and has been featured in literary magazines, TV shows, and films.
Born in Southwark, London in 1952, Lampe had a passion for drawing and writing from an early age. He attended the prestigious Central School of Art, where he studied drawing and printmaking. After graduating in 1974, Lampe began a successful career in advertising, working for clients including the BBC, Mars and The Guardian. During this time Lampe honed his skills as an illustrator, creating memorable posters and campaigns for clients.
In 1984, Lampe decided to leave advertising to pursue his dream of being a full-time writer and illustrator. His first published book, The House He Found (published in 1985), was met with critical acclaim. Lampe won numerous awards for the book, including the British Book Award in 1986. Following The House He Found, Lampe went on to produce several other books in different genres, including the science fiction novel The Ghost of the Flies (1987), the fantasy novel The Cove of Hidden Light (1989), and the horror novel The Sleeping Green (1993). A common theme throughout these books is Lampe’s exploration of the darker aspects of human nature, as well as his fascination with mythology and folklore.
In 2000, Lampe released his autobiographical novel, The Unending Journey: Memoirs of an Illustrator, which was a critical and commercial success. The book was adapted into a TV miniseries by the BBC in 2003 and also nominated for a BAFTA award. Since then, Lampe has continued to produce popular novels for children and adults, such as Heaven’s Reach (2005) and Grayfire (2007).
In 2010, Lampe announced that he would be retiring from the book world to focus on other projects. Since then, he has earned a living as a 3-D computer graphic designer and a concept artist. He has also written several non-fiction books, such as Drawing Power: The Art and Science of Visual Thinking (2015) and Drawn to Dream: An Artist’s Life (2016). Lampe is also the creator of the children’s podcast Draw! Draw! Draw!
