David Mead
David Mead is an award-winning author and illustrator who has written and illustrated a wide range of books for children, teens, and adults. His books are widely available in bookstores and libraries across the United States and Canada, as well as in other countries around the world.
Mead was born in Ontario, Canada, and grew up as a self-described art nerd who was always drawing and doodling. As an adult he pursued a career in illustration and design and worked in a variety of creative roles. He eventually decided to focus his energy on writing and illustration and in 2002, he sold his first published children’s book, "The Boy Who Spoke to Trees". This book followed the adventures of a young boy named Jared who travels the world in search of his lost family.
In 2005, Mead wrote and illustrated the award-winning children’s book "Where the Mountain Meets The Sea", which was a finalist for the 2004 Governor General’s Award for Children’s Literature. This book chronicles the adventures of a young girl named Gracie, who is forced by her parents to move from their beach house on an island to the snowy mountains. As she struggles to adjust to her new home, Gracie discovers the beauty and dangers that lie waiting for her in her mountain home.
Mead has also worked on a wide range of other projects including, "The After Hours", which was a 2016 Governor General Picture Book Award nominee. This picturebook follows a young girl named Ella and her grandmother as they explore the city after dark. With Ella’s vivid imagination, the night comes to life with creatures, characters, and magical tales that captivate and delight readers.
In 2018, Mead was the writer and illustrator of "The Wolf and The Woodsman". This book, which was a finalist for the 2019 Governor General’s Award for Children’s Literature, follows the story of a woodsman who is sent to save a cursed village from a pack of wolves. With the help of his magical wolf companion, the woodsman embarks on a journey of overcoming danger and discovering friendship.
Mead’s work has received widespread praise and recognition. In 2020, his book "The Wolf and the Woodsman" won the TD Canadian Children’s Literature Award.
