David Perlmutter

David Perlmutter is an American physician and New York Times bestselling author. He is a board-certified neurologist and an expert on fiber, probiotics, and nutrition in neurological health and disease. He has written extensively about the use of dietary supplements and personalized nutrition in mitigating neurological damage and promoting optimal cognitive health.

Dr. Perlmutter received his medical degree from the University of Miami in 1975 and became a board-certified neurologist in 1978. He is the author of seven books including Grain Brain, Brain Maker and Power Up Your Brain.

In his best-selling book Grain Brain, Perlmutter reveals that the key to preventing Alzheimer’s disease and future episodes of dementia has been in our hands all along. Research shows, and he explains in great detail in his book, that wheat, specifically gluten, which is present in wheat, could be the most destructive ingredient in modern diets today. Moreover, replacing carbs and sugars with healthy fats can reduce the risk of neurological disorders, particularly those that cause memory loss.

In Brain Maker, Dr. Perlmutter explains how optimizing the microbiome, the collection of bacteria in the gut, can help protect our brains. He reveals that beneficial bacteria can reduce inflammation and protect us from diseases, such as Alzheimer’s. He explains how to re-balance the microbiome through a diet that includes pre- and probiotics, fermented foods, and healthy fats.

Dr. Perlmutter’s most recent book, Power Up Your Brain, explores the latest research on the power of nutrition and lifestyle choices as medicine, including how to optimize brain function, delay the aging process and prevent brain-related diseases such as Alzheimer’s and dementia.

In it, he explains how the right kinds of fats play a role in supporting the brain, and offers an anti-aging diet plan that focuses on proteins, healthy fats, fiber, low sugar and low carbohydrates. He also discusses the role of hormones, including testosterone, in supporting both brain and body health, and provides ways to increase hormone production naturally.

In 2007, Dr. Perlmutter established the Perlmutter Health Center, formerly known as The Perlmutter Neuroscience Center, in Naples, Florida to provide personalized and comprehensive neurological care. He has two locations in Naples and one in Fort Myers.
