Doc Searls

Doc Searls, who is sometimes referred to as “the Godfather of the open source movement,” is a leading computer scientist, author and entrepreneur. He is best known for his influential books, “The Cluetrain Manifesto” and “The Intention Economy.”

In his groundbreaking book, “The Cluetrain Manifesto,” Searls, along with co-authors Chris Locke, Rick Levine and David Weinberger, argued that the new internet was changing the way people interact, by turning traditional customers into genuine participants in the marketplace. This new “conversational marketing” was empowering ordinary people, who could now become a trusted source of information and opinions that businesses needed to understand.

In “The Intention Economy,” Searls explains how this new information-driven marketplace is enabling customers to make more informed decisions and how companies can capitalize on it. By understanding their customers’ intentions and connecting them to the right products and services, companies can benefit directly from customers’ preferences and even shape the market in their favor.

Searls has also written several other books and articles. His book “Re-inventing Software: What's Inside the Box” explores the opportunities for software innovation that exist in the current market. In “The Big Switch: Rewiring the World from Edison to Google,” he explains how distributed computing systems are changing the way we process information and how digital computing can be leveraged to address both technological and organizational issues.

In addition to his books, Doc Searls is an active member of the open source community. As a director of the Linux Foundation, he works to promote the use of open source software and to ensure that the development process remains accessible to everyone. He has also served as an advisor to the World Economic Forum on technology-industry related subjects.

Doc Searls has been widely recognized as one of the most influential figures in the open source movement. He was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Linux Foundation in 2004. He was also named one of TIME magazine’s “100 Innovators of the Digital Age” in 2006, and was a finalist in the 2012 CNET News Digital Innovator of the Year Awards.

Doc Searls is a passionate advocate for giving customers the power to choose, and making sure that technology serves the public instead of exploiting it. His books and articles explore the evolving consumer-driven marketplace, and he provides invaluable guidance for companies on how to embrace the new consumer-driven economy. Whether you’re an entrepreneur, a technology expert, or just a curious reader, there’s something to be learned from Doc Searls’ work.
