Emanuel Derman

Emanuel Derman is a celebrated theoretical physicist, financial engineer, entrepreneur, and award-winning author. He was born in 1944 in South Africa and attended the University of the Witwatersrand. After completing his undergraduate studies, he attended Columbia University in New York where he earned a Ph.D. in Physics.

When Emanuel Derman moved to the United States, he began to work for the Wall Street firm D.E. Shaw. During his time at D.E. Shaw, Derman saw the need for quantitative models in the world of finance. He started developing these models and served as an advisor to many firms.

Derman’s work on quantitative models gained him a great deal of recognition. In 1995, he was inducted into the International Association of Financial Engineers’ Hall of Fame. He was also the recipient of numerous awards throughout his career, including the 2010 Quantum Fund Champions Prize.
