Eric Metaxas
Eric Metaxas is an American author, speaker, and radio host, best known for his bestselling biographies, children's books and Christian-themed works. Born in 1964 in New York City, he grew up in Danbury, Connecticut, a city with a strong religious heritage. He was raised in a Greek Orthodox home, which shaped his religious and cultural sensibilities.
Metaxas attended Yale University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Theater Studies in 1986. He has since described himself as having been "heavily influenced" by his studies of the dramatic works of William Shakespeare while at university. He furthered his education at the Yale School of Drama where he studied dramaturgy and earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1992.
Metaxas is an acclaimed writer, his works touching on a range of topics from philosophy and history to faith and culture. He is the author of several biographies and memoirs, including:
• Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy (2010), a best-selling biography of the German pastor, theologian and Nazi dissident Dietrich Bonhoeffer;
• Seven Men and The Secret of Their Greatness (2013), a collection of biographical sketches, each looking at a significant figure from the last two hundred years;
• If You Can Keep It: The Forgotten Promise of American Liberty (2016), a work of political philosophy considering the principles of American exceptionalism;
• Miracles (2018), an exploration of the concept of miracles in the context of Christianity.
Metaxas has also written several children's books, including Mouse Nation, Squanto and the Miracle of Thanksgiving, Squanto and the First Thanksgiving, and Squanto and the Strange New World.
He has also written three novels, including Everything Can Change (2006) and Maria and the Admiral (2010). His most recent novel, The Big Lie, was published in 2014.
In addition to his writing, Metaxas is a frequent public speaker, appearing on college campuses and conferences around the country. He has also hosted a nationally syndicated radio talk show, Metaxas, since 2010. Metaxas has also been active in political activism with a focus on religious freedom and the right to life.
Metaxas has received numerous awards, including a Wilberforce Award in 2012 for Bonhoeffer and a Beacon of Light Award in 2010 for his work as a radio host.
Metaxas continues to lecture, write, and appear on television and radio programs to this day. His latest work is Seven Women and the Secret of Their Greatness, an exploration of seven great women from the last two hundred years.
