He has been a professor in English and American literature and received his Masters in Journalism from the University of California, Berkeley. His first book, Generation Kill: Devil Dogs, Iceman, Captain America, and the New Face of American War, is a narrative nonfiction account of Wright’s time embedded as part of an embedded journalist unit in Iraq and covers the US run-up to the invasion of Iraq by US Marine Corps personnel in 2003. The book was subsequently adapted into a critically acclaimed mini-series for HBO.

His second book, A Death in Belmont, is a nonfiction account of the mysterious murder of a woman in Belmont, Massachusetts, by the Boston Strangler. The murderer is still unknown. The book was nominated for a National Book Award and was adapted into a feature film in 2006.

His third book, Hella Nation: Looking for Happy Meals in Kandahar, Rocking the Side Pipe, Wingnut's War Against the Gap, and Other Adventures With the Totally Lost Tribes of America, is an account of five years of his travels across America, from deep beneath the Sierra Nevada to South Buffalo, back and forth across the continent, to show the views and dreams of a nation in constant flux. It also follows the hippy, biker, punk, and runaway youth cultures during this time, and shows how they are shaped by and influence the rapidly changing face of American life.

His most recent book, How To Get Into the Twin Palms, chronicles his 30-month journey through the world of Hollywood and Los Angeles, California, in particular. He follows one of the up-and-coming directors and producers in Hollywood, Scott Munson, a privileged and highly ambitious young man who is living a Hollywood dream. The book shows how both successes and failures can shape one’s career in Hollywood.
