Frances Hodgson Burnett
Frances Hodgson Burnett (November 24, 1849 – October 29, 1924) was an English-American playwright, author, and social activist remembered for her popular children's novels, particularly Little Lord Fauntleroy, A Little Princess and The Secret Garden. Burnett was the daughter of British parents who immigrated to the United States in 1865 and established a dry goods business in the South. Burnett grew up in the family's store and watched her father struggle to keep up with their finances, which left a deep impression on the young Burnett. She was educated at home and wrote stories to help keep the family business afloat.
In 1862, Burnett successfully published her first story and later moved to Great Britain where she made a name for herself as a writer. Her first novel, "That Lass o' Lowrie's" was published in 1877. Burnett became a recognized public figure in the United States after her success with the "Little Lord Fauntleroy" novel, which was published in 1886. The novel became an immediate bestseller in both the United States and Great Britain and 11 years later it was made into a movie.
Throughout her life, Frances Hodgson Burnett wrote 28 books, five plays and contributed her work to numerous magazines. Most of her works for children were published between 1875 and 1914 and she held both British and American citizenship. Even though Burnett was an established artist, she was not widely known in the literary world until much later in her life. It wasn't until her death in 1924 that she was recognized as one of the greatest children's authors in the 20th century.
Hodgson-Burnett built her own career with enthusiasm and hard work and displayed tremendous creativity. She was receptive to the input of others and showed respect for their opinions and advice. Her works for children were not part only of entertainment; they were an important lesson in teaching the principles of ethics, loyalty, good manners, and self-discovery that were fundamental in Burnett's vision of the world.
Most of Burnett's classic stories are set in the English countrysides, while others take place in the United States. Her literature is thoughtfully written and has a strong moral behind it. Burnett's characters were taught the importance of rising above bad circumstances and developing good character. Through her work, Burnett sought to emphasize the power of the spirit to rise above the difficulties of life and create a place of peace and joy.
Frances Hodgson Burnett is remembered for her beautiful words and her ability to craft stories that captivate the imagination of children and adults alike. She has had great influence on literature and popular culture. Her works have been adapted into play, film, and television versions. The legacy of Frances Hodgson Burnett will continue to be celebrated for many years to come.
