Gary Chapman is the renowned author of the bestselling book The Five Love Languages: How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mate. As a relationship counselor, counselor educator, pastor and lecturer, Gary Chapman has developed a highly successful and influential system for helping couples learn to express their love for one another in meaningful and fulfilling ways.

Son of a CPA and homemaker, Gary Chapman was born and raised in the small town of Cleveland, Tennessee in 1938. He attended Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina and obtained a Master of Religious Education degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas in 1966. He later completed a doctorate in Child and Family Studies at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.

In the 40 years he has spent studying successful relationships, Gary Chapman has strived to bring practical and lasting solutions to couples and families in crisis. The hallmark of his success comes from his belief that every couple needs to find their own “bond” and grow together. How a couple expresses this bond is the foundation of the Five Love Languages.

The Five Love Languages were developed by Gary Chapman in 1995 as a way to help couples learn how to express and receive love. The five languages he identifies are Words of Affirmations, Quality Time, Receiving Gifts, Acts of Service and Physical Touch. Chapman argues that everyone has a “love language”, or a preferred way to express and experience love. He believes that when both members of a couple understand each other’s love language, they can open up to each other and create a strong, lasting bond.

Gary Chapman has written and spoken extensively about relationships. His books have been hugely successful, not just among couples, but also as a way to gain insight into the complex inner workings of relationships and family dynamics. In his book The Five Love Languages, he offers step-by-step advice for couples on how to communicate love and build connections. He encourages those in relationships to learn and understand each other, as well as themselves, in order to create meaningful, lasting connections.

The principles in Gary Chapman’s works are focused on the importance of two-way communication, understanding each other’s feelings and expressing feelings constructively. He asks couples to take responsibility for their own happiness, practice compassion and forgive past mistakes. In this way, Gary has helped countless people create and maintain healthy relationships.

As a speaker, exhibitioner and workshop leader, Gary Chapman has shared his insights and advice with thousands of people.
