Gene Roberts
Gene Roberts is an American author and editor who has written several non-fiction books and contributed to many more. Roberts has been a writer and editor for both national and international publications for over two decades. He is also a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist.
Roberts’ books include ‘New York Times Dispatches From the50 States: Listening to and Reporting America’ and ‘Searching For the Promised Land: an African American Odyssey’, both of which are Pulitzer Prize winners. He has also published works such as ‘Home and Away: Memoir of a Fan’, ‘One Country: A Bold Proposal to End the Israeli-Palestinian Impasse’ and ‘My Father’s Music’.
Roberts’ career began in the mid-1970s, when he was hired as an editor at The Washington Post. In his time there, he edited Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein’s coverage of Watergate. He later became an editor of The New York Times. While at The Times, Roberts was responsible for launching an ambitious investigative series entitled “The Times Dispatches from the Fifty States.”
The series sought to put a “human face” on poverty and illustrate how people were affected by economic issues. It also took an in-depth look at the different laws and policies that shaped life in each state. The series was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for national reporting in 1986.
In 1987, Roberts moved to London to become the European correspondent for The New York Times. From there, he wrote a number of articles, which ranged from detailed accounts of criminal trials in France, to reports on the problems faced by refugees in Turkey.
He eventually moved back to the United States in 1991 and began working as an editor for Scientific American magazine. In the late 1990s, he began writing for ESPN Magazine and then for the sports section of The New York Times. In 2003, he joined the staff of Civil War Times magazine.
Throughout his career, Roberts wrote and edited non-fiction books, most of which focus on civil rights, social justice, and the environment. Among his titles are: ‘No Shame in My Game: The Working Poor in the Inner City’, ‘Searching For the Promised Land: an African American Odyssey’, and ‘One Country: A Bold Proposal to End the Israeli-Palestinian Impasse’.
Roberts’ books combine elements of personal experience and journalistic reporting. He provides detailed accounts of issues such as poverty, racism, incarceration, and immigration while also offering suggestions on how to improve problematic conditions.
