Gene Sperling

Gene Sperling is an economist and author who focuses on public policies to sustain economic security, increase economic opportunity, and reduce economic inequality. A native of Minnesota, Sperling received his B.A. from the University of Minnesota, attended the London School of Economics and Political Science, and earned his law degree at Harvard Law School. He has held several senior positions in the White House, Treasury, and National Economic Council and has published three books.

Sperling spent his early career working as an economic advisor for both Democratic and Republican presidential campaigns. During the Clinton Administration, he served in several senior positions in the White House and Treasury, including as National Economic Advisor from 1996 to 2001. His tenure during Clinton’s second term is known for helping to manage an unprecedented budget surplus which was largely used to pay down the national debt.

In those positions, Gene Sperling gained a reputation as a savvy and knowledgeable economic policy advisor. During the George W. Bush Administration, he worked as the counselor to treasury secretary Paul O’Neill.

After his time in Washington, Sperling became a professor at the University of California’s Goldman School of Public Policy. In that role, he took a leading role in educating the next generation of public policy makers.

Besides his work in academia, Gene Sperling has written several books. His first book, “The Pro-Growth Progressive: An Economic Strategy for Shared Prosperity,” made a case for progressive economic policies. The book argued that by investing in infrastructure, training, and research, we could strengthen and lift up America’s middle class.

Sperling’s second book, “Economic Dignity,” was received as a powerful testament to what is needed from our political leaders during this period of economic disruption. His most recent book, “Recovery Summer,” focuses on specific policy interventions to create jobs and boost economic efficiency.

In “Recovery Summer,” as in his other works, Gene Sperling offers important wisdom to help us rebuild the nation’s economic foundations. He makes a compelling case for targeted public investments in infrastructure, equality of access, research, and workforce development. He urges political leaders to play a critical role in sustaining economic recovery, fostering job growth and reducing economic inequality.

By proposing politically viable and economically responsible strategies, Sperling’s works offer timely and relevant advice to the current administration and to policy makers across the political spectrum.

Gene Sperling’s publications have become popular reads among those interested in economics, policy, and the future of our nation. By examining current trends and providing effective solutions, his works have been essential to the economic debate in this country.
