Geoffrey Parker
Geoffrey Parker is the author of several books on military history, including Global Crisis: War, Climate Change and Catastrophe in the Seventeenth Century and The Military Revolution: A History of Warfare from AD 1000 to AD 2000. He also wrote about topics related to the history of science, religion, and political thought. Parker has taught at several universities in the United Kingdom, including Cambridge and London.
Parker was born in London on August 31, 1946. He attended Radley College and Cambridge University, where he received his degree in History in 1968. After graduating, he joined the academic staff at the University of Sheffield. During the 1970s, he became interested in military history and started to research it. He did his post-doctoral work at the University of Rochester and the University of Birmingham. Parker's interest in military history soon developed into a passion, and he wrote his first book, Go Large! War, Strategy, and the Creation of the Grand Alliance, in 1977.
In 1983, Parker published Grand Strategy in War and Peace, which explored the relationship between strategy and politics. This book established him as one of the foremost authorities on military history. In 1989, he published The Military Revolution: A History of Warfare from AD 1000 to AD 2000, which remains one of his most important works. In this book, he focused on the revolutionary changes in warfare that occurred from the 11th to the 20th centuries.
Parker was also the author of Global Crisis: War, Climate Change and Catastrophe in the Seventeenth Century, first published in 2013. In this work, he explored the combined effects of climatic change, disease, and warfare on the stability of societies and states. He wrote the book while Professor of History at UCLA.
In addition to his books, Parker has also written numerous articles and reviews on military history, science, religion, and political thought. He has also edited several works on similar subjects, including Religion and Politics in Early Modern Europe (1987), The Thirty Years War (1989), and Religion, Law and Society in Early Modern Europe (1993).
Parker's numerous works have been translated into multiple languages, and he has been awarded a number of honors. He was elected a Fellow of the British Academy in 2000, and in 2010 he was named a Commander of the Order of the British Empire for his contributions to military history.
