George Packer

George Packer is an award-winning American journalist, novelist, and playwright best known for his nonfiction books on war, politics, and national identity in the United States and abroad. Born in Brooklyn in 1960, Packer grew up in a politically active family in the suburbs of San Francisco. He graduated from Harvard University in 1982 and was subsequently a journalist in the US and abroad. He has covered a variety of topics, from the war in Iraq to the Arab Spring and became a staff writer at the New Yorker in 2003. He has also appeared on television programs such as Hardball on MSNBC and The Colbert Report.

Packer’s works explore how contemporary conflicts have impacted the lives of individuals with whom he has interacted. He has written novels and plays, with his first book, The Village of Waiting, published in 1988. His second novel, The Half Man, was published in 1991 and was followed by The Execution of Justice in 1998. Packer also authored the play Betrayed, which focuses on the occupation of Iraq.

Packer is perhaps best known for his nonfiction works, including The Assassins’ Gate: America in Iraq, which was a finalist for the 2006 Pulitzer Prize. He was awarded the National Book Award for his 2003 nonfiction book, The Unwinding: An Inner History of the New America, which portrays how American political institutions, the global economy, and technology have reshaped the lives of US citizens since the 1970s. His most recent work is the 2016 book Our Man: Richard Holbrooke and the End of the American Century, which chronicles the life and work of the late American diplomat Richard Holbrooke.

Packer’s works seek to analyze the political and social conditions of the time, often looking at it from a micro-perspective and telling the stories of individual citizens. He has also devoted a large part of his career to exploring the implications of US foreign policy and the conflicts in the Middle East. His works emphasize the human costs of war, and his writing style is often described as accessible, engaging, and sharply observed.

Packer’s works have been critically acclaimed for their ability to bring topics and stories to light that often remain uncontested and absent in the public eye. His books are often highly regarded for their in-depth investigations into the lives of everyday citizens and his ability to portray their lives with a level of detail and empathy few others can achieve. George Packer is a journalist and author whose works shine a light on how US foreign policy and domestic changes can affect the lives of individuals in often overlooked and unexpected ways.
