Heidi Julavitz is an American novelist, playwright, and scholar. Born in 1976, Julavitz grew up reading classics and attending theater workshops, allowing her to hone her writing skills at a young age. After graduating from Tufts University, Julavitz completed her Masters and Doctoral degrees from New York University’s prestigious Graduate Program. During this program, Julavitz wrote her first play, She-Devil! The Musical, which was produced and performed off-Broadway.

Since then, Julavitz has published a critically acclaimed novel, plays, and numerous works of scholarship. Her novel, Some Dreams Are Worth Keeping, was named one of Library Journal’s Best Books of 2018 and one of Kirkus Reviews’ Best Books of 2018. In this novel, Julavitz weaves together two distinct, yet similar, stories in a stunningly imaginative way. The story follows 17 year-old Mina, who discovers she has magical powers and must face the challenges that come with them. At the same time, Mina is searching for information about her father, who has been missing for years.

In her plays, Julavitz demonstrates an ability to mix humor and poignancy to explore the complexity of relationships. In her latest play, Everything You're Not Supposed To Be, Julavitz follows a family with one member trying their best to connect with the rest in an uncomfortable silences and secrets. With each of her works, Julavitz has created complex characters that contain elements of humanity that many readers can identify with.

Julavitz’s scholarship and papers have been featured in various literary journals and textbooks. Her book, Writing in the 21st Century, is a standard work in the field of composition studies. In addition to writing, Julavitz has also been a teacher. She has taught writing and literature courses at The New School, Brooklyn College, CUNY, and NYU. Julavitz has also been an audience member judge at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Festival and a grant reviewer for the National Endowment of the Arts. She is currently a professor at the University of Clarksville, Tennessee, where she teaches composition and literature courses.
