International Code Council
The International Code Council (ICC), formerly known as the Building Officials and Code Administrators (BOCA), is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing public safety and providing the foundation for safe and sustainable construction around the world. It is a network of over 6,000 building officials, contractors, engineers, architects, code inspectors and other professionals who work together to develop and maintain safe and sustainable building standards. As an organization, the ICC focuses on global code solutions that protect public health, safety, and welfare while providing innovative research, education, and resources.
The ICC was founded in 1994 in response to the increasing demand for uniform building codes that would ensure the structural integrity and safety of buildings and infrastructure. By embracing the latest building technology, the ICC creates international codes and approaches that can be adapted to meet the unique needs of individual project locations.
The ICC helps develop codes and standards that are widely recognized and adopted, like the International Building Code, International Residential Code, International Existing Building Code, International Fire Code, and International Plumbing Code, among others. The ICC also develops supplementary standards for green building, energy efficiency, and hurricane and earthquake engineering.
The ICC works with government officials and industry professionals to develop codes and standards that are both comprehensive and enforceable. The ICC also provides comprehensive research, development, education, and training materials for codes and standards users, developers, and implementers.
The International Code Council seeks to foster and promote safe, functional, and reliable construction, recognizing that the success of any building project is dependent on the establishment and implementation of correct codes and standards. By concentrating on global solutions, the ICC strives to ensure that all nations have access to the same information and guidelines needed to ensure the safety of their citizens. Additionally, the ICC provides access to a network of highly qualified individuals including engineers, architects, and contractors who provide expertise and guidance on adoption, implementation and enforcement of codes and standards.
The International Code Council also offers certification programs, such as the Certified Building Official, Certified Fire Code Official, and Certified Existing Building Official programs. Through its certification programs, ICC ensures that those responsible for enforcing codes and standards receive the highest level of professional training and competency.
The ICC also provides a variety of resources and services to support building code and fire safety decisions, education, and research. The ICC developed the Building Performance Database, which provides access to anonymous construction data that can be used to inform design and optimise building performance. Additionally, the ICC Academy provides online training for members and partners, with resources for codes and standards, green building, and certifications.
The International Code Council works to ensure the safety of those in and around buildings in accordance with the latest building technology, codes and standards. By providing the resources needed for safe and sustainable construction, the ICC has made significant contributions to the safety and wellbeing of communities around the world.
