J. K. Rowling
J.K. Rowling is the English author and screenwriter of the beloved Harry Potter book series. She has become one of the most beloved and well-known authors in the world and her immensely popular book series has established her as a major force in the literary realm.
Rowling was born and raised in England, but she also lived in Portugal for a few years with her mother, father, and younger sister. While living in Portugal, she attended high school and studied Portuguese and French. Rowling would later return to the UK to attend university, where she earned an honors degree in French and Classics. After college, Rowling worked at various administrative jobs, including the office of Amnesty International in London.
Rowling had begun writing her first novel, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, whilst living in Portugal. Set in a world of wizardry, the story follows the adventures of young Harry Potter and his friends as they attempt to fight off the dark forces of the wizarding world. After the novel was completed, Rowling was rejected a dozen times before Bloomsbury Publishing accepted the manuscript in 1997. The novel was a massive hit and was followed by six highly successful sequels that formed the famous Harry Potter series.
Rowling achieved international success with her beloved books, many of which have been adapted into blockbuster films. In 2011, she also released two books about the wizarding world: The Tales of Beedle the Bard and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them – the latter being adapted into a highly successful movie trilogy.
Off the back of her success, Rowling has become one of the wealthiest people in the world. Not only is she the first person to become a billionaire by writing novels, but her work has also earned her numerous awards and recognitions. In 2000, Rowling was awarded an Order of the British Empire for her literary contributions, and she was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 2001.
