J. R. R. Tolkien

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien is one of the most famous novelists and authors in the history of literature. Tolkien is best known for creating The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion, among other popular works. He is credited as the father of modern fantasy literature and has been the subject of numerous studies, biographies, and film adaptations.

Tolkien was born in 1892 in South Africa, though his family moved to England shortly after he was born. In England, he attended school at King Edward's School and later at Oxford University. It was at Oxford where Tolkien first encountered the works of William Morris, the father of the fantasy genre, which inspired him to become a writer. After graduating, Tolkien embarked on a career as a professor of Anglo Saxon literature at Oxford.

Throughout his life, Tolkien was an avid reader, finding inspiration in the works of medieval and modern authors such as C. S. Lewis, J. M. Barrie, E. Nesbit, and many others. He loved the outdoors and would often go on walking tours with his brother Hilary and other friends. As a professor, he applied his love of language and literature to create tales of fantasy and adventure. His creative works drew heavily from his academic research, including the Dark Ages and Welsh language, which he included in elements of his writings.

Tolkien was a life-long believer in Christianity, though his writings had many aspects that related to traditional pagan beliefs and themes. He drew from his faith to create his stories and his characters, often using loyalty and respect for the natural world in his works. Several of Tolkien’s works were published posthumously and former professor, Christopher Tolkien, edited his father’s work as well as finished several incomplete stories and works.

Tolkien remains a household name to this day. His books and films have been widely adapted and it is estimated that The Lord of the Rings trilogy has sold over 150 million copies since its original publication in 1954-5. He has a strong influence on contemporary writers and the fantasy genre, with numerous books and films being based upon his works and ideas. Numerous academic studies have been written on his works and influence, showing that his influence will continue to be felt for many years to come.
