James H. Stock
James H. Stock is an American economist and the Harold Hitchings Burbank professor of political economy at Harvard University. He is widely regarded as one of the leading economists of his generation, having made significant contributions to economics in the areas of public finance, macroeconomics and macroeconomic policy, and public economics.
Stock has had a long and distinguished career as an economist. He earned his BA from Princeton in 1967 and his PhD from MIT in 1972. After completing his education, Stock worked at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, first as a research officer and later as an assistant vice president for research and policy analysis. From 1979 to 1991 he was a professor at Harvard, teaching courses in public finance, macroeconomics and macroeconomic policy, and public economics.
In 1991, Stock joined the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), where he was a Research Associate until 2003. During his time at the NBER he was the Director of the Applied Economics Program, the Program on Taxation and Public Economics, and the Program on Trends in Economic and Political Reform. He has also served as Director of the National Science Foundation's Program on Social and Economic Incentives.
Stock is the author of numerous books, including "Household Decisions on Consumption and Saving" (1980), "Public Economics and Public Choice" (2004), "The Political Economy of Public Debt" (2010), and "The Macroeconomics of Self-Fulfilling Prophecies" (2012). His works have covered topics from public policy to macroeconomic policy. Stock's works have become essential texts for researchers and economists studying public economics, economic growth and public policy.
Stock has also served as the editor for several economics journals, as an associate editor for The Review of Economics and Statistics and The American Economic Review, and as a senior editor for Econometrica. In addition, he is a research associate for the National Bureau of Economic Research and a fellow for the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Stock has earned numerous awards and is one of the most respected economists in the world. He has been decorated by the governments of France and the United States, and in 1999 he was named president of the American Economic Association.
