Jeff Vandermeer
Jeff Vandermeer is a critically-acclaimed speculative fiction author whose works have captivated readers with their profound explorations of human nature and the limits of imagination. Jeff Vandermeer was born in 1968 in the Florida Panhandle. He was a constant reader from an early age, consuming works by the likes of Edgar Allan Poe, Robert Heinlein, and Stephen King among others. His early interests in science fiction and fantasy further developed in college, where he worked on the literary magazine Phantasmagoria. After college, Vandermeer worked as a literary worker for St. Martin’s Press and for several zines.
In 2002, Vandermeer’s career as an author truly took off with the publication of his first novel Veniss Underground. The novel follows a man’s journey into a dismal city where humans and animals intertwine in various ways. It was a huge critical success, winning the International Horror Guild Award and World Fantasy, Locus, and British Science Fiction Association Awards nominations. The Veniss Underground was followed by a trilogy of books set in the City of Saints and Madmen. The series continues to be held in high regard, with the first book in the series (Shriek: An Afterword) being named the best novel of 2006 on Amazon.
In 2014, Vandermeer’s ambitious novel Annihilation was published. The book focuses on a group of scientists who travel into an isolated and ever-changing area known as The Southern Reach. Annihilation was followed by two sequels in as many years (Authority and Acceptance), and the series was later adapted into a Hollywood film.
Vandermeer’s numerous highly-regarded works also include his nonfiction book Wonderbook (2013) and his collaborative project Invisible Cities (2016). The latter, a collection of fiction and art inspired by the works of Italo Calvino, was compiled with the help of artists and authors from around the world. In 2016, Vandermeer’s most recent novel Borne was nominated for a Nebula Award.
