Joby Warrick

Joby Warrick is an award-winning journalist and author of multiple best-selling books. He is a nationally recognized authority on topics related to terrorism, espionage and the Middle East. Warrick has spent more than two decades delving into foreign affairs for The Washington Post, for which he won the Pulitzer Prize for his 2016 coverage of the Islamic State.

Born in Richmond, Virginia in 1954, Warrick was raised in the South. His interest in foreign affairs began early and he studied the Middle East and Islamic history at the College of William and Mary. After graduating, he worked as a reporter at the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, and in 1997 he moved to Washington to join The Washington Post, where he covered national security and international affairs. He has reported from more than 30 countries, including Iraq and Syria, and has written extensively on the Middle East, terrorism and war.

In 2011, Warrick released his first book, Black Flags: The Rise of ISIS, an internationally acclaimed work of investigative journalism. His next book, Red Line: The Unraveling of Syria and the Plan to Stop It, was released in 2020. Red Line provides a detailed account of the civil war in Syria and the international failure to stem it. He also brings to light issues related to the conflict, such as the regional displacement of millions of Syrians and the rise of Islamic State terrorism.

Warrick has received various honors for his work, including the Godwin Award for Investigative Journalism in 2012, the Whitman Bassow Award from The Overseas Press Club of America in 2014 and the Pulitzer Prize. His books have been praised for their research, storytelling and clear-eyed analysis of complex issues.

In addition to his writing and reporting, Warrick serves on the board of the International Women’s Media Foundation and is a frequent speaker at universities and other institutions. He is a contributing analyst for NBC News and a regular guest on radio and television programs.
