Joe Dominguez

Joe Dominguez is an American author and financial planner who popularized the concept of voluntary simplicity. He is most well-known for his best-selling book Your Money or Your Life, co-authored with Vicki Robin. The book has been a seminal guide for financial independence, influencing generations of readers to radically reconsider their relationships with money and to live more frugally and simply.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1937, Joe Dominguez had a successful career in Wall Street as a security analyst, amassing over a million dollars before the age of 30. However, he turned his back on his high-profile career in midlife to live “simply and happily” on approximately $500 per month.

Dominguez was deeply influenced by the philosophies of Mahatma Gandhi and Henry David Thoreau, believing that a simple life was the key to true happiness and contentment. He sought to live within his means, embracing self-sufficiency and rejecting debt and materialism. He was an advocate of a movement called voluntary simplicity which sought to empower individuals to make choices for sustenance that are beneficial for their health and the environment.

In 1992, Dominguez self-published an initial run of 3,000 copies of Your Money or Your Life. The book was an instant success, selling more than one million copies. In it, Dominguez and Robin promote their philosophy of taking full responsibility for their money and lives. They emphasize awareness, “tracking” spending and time, and “living well on less.” They reject high-yielding but risky financial strategies such as stock market investments in favor of more sustainable practices.

Since then, Your Money or Your Life has remained popular among readers seeking personal financial freedom, inspiring over three million copies sold in a dozen languages. It has been the subject of multiple reviews, interviews, and radio programs. The book has also been updated over the years and revised editions have been released to great acclaim.

The publication of the book gave Dominguez and Robin the opportunity to travel and spread the word about their philosophy. They gave lectures, interviews, and workshops in the United States and abroad and founded the nonprofit organization Life Champions Institute, which provides information and resources on sustainable living practices.

In 1994, Dominguez retired from his involvement with the organization while his partner Robin continued to lead it. Soon afterwards, he passed away from cancer in 1997 at the age of 59.

Though his life was short, Joe Dominguez’s legacy continues to inspire generations and has been a beacon of financial freedom and voluntary simplicity. His book, Your Money or Your Life, remains one of the most influential books on personal finance and has sold more than three million copies worldwide. His ideas have contributed to the growing international popularity of living simply and sustainably, making him an iconic figure in the personal finance and self-sufficiency movement.
