John Carreyrou

John Carreyrou is an investigative journalist, celebrated author, and a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner. He is best known for his non-fiction books Bad Blood, which investigated a major health care fraud andSecrets: The Use and Abuse of Private Health Care, which shed light on healthcare fraud and profiteering in the US.

John Carreyrou was born in French Canada in 1964. He studied law at the University of Montreal, but decided to pursue an education in journalism, graduating from Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism in 1993.

Carreyrou began his professional career at the Wall Street Journal in 1995, reporting on such topics as government regulation, telecommunications, and media. He soon rose to the position of staff writer, where he wrote articles exposing corporate giants like Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley.

In 2004, Carreyrou moved to Paris, France, to cover the stock market and business world in Europe. He continued his work at the Wall Street Journal, with several notable articles being published in the paper.

In 2015, John Carreyrou set out to research and write a book on Theranos, a medical start-up founded by the now-infamous Elizabeth Holmes. Holmes had promised the technology to revolutionize and make blood testing easier. After multiple long-form articles exposing the truth and many reliable sources, Carreyrou’s book Bad Blood was published in 2018, outlining the shocking story of deception and fraud regarding the program.

The expose was noted for breaking a silence among the Silicon Valley elites that were invested in the program. Bad Blood went on to gain critical and popular acclaim, earning his first Pulitzer Prize in investigative reporting in 2019.

His second book, Secrets: The Use and Abuse of Private Health Care, was released in 2020 and received highly acclaimed attention in the fight against healthcare fraud and profiteering in the US. In 2021, Carreyrou was awarded the George Polk Career Award for his long-term achievement in public service journalism.
