John Green
John Green is an internationally best-selling author of both fiction and nonfiction books. He is perhaps best known for his 2006 young adult novel, Looking for Alaska, which was the recipient of the prestigious Printz Award, as well as his 2008 novel, The Fault in Our Stars, which was adapted into the 2014 romantic drama film of the same name.
John Green was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, on August 24, 1977. He attended Indian Springs School, a boarding school near Birmingham, Alabama, and later earned his bachelor’s degree in English from Kenyon College in 2000. A few years later, he received his master’s degree in Religious Studies from the University of Chicago Divinity School.
While in college, Green co-created the educational video blog, Brotherhood 2.0, alongside his brother, Hank Green. The videos often discussed topics related to literature, history and popular culture. The blog session, dubbed “Thursdays with Hank and John”, quickly became a hit.
In 2005, Green released his first novel, Looking for Alaska, which tells the story of a group of teenage friends at a boarding school who become obsessive about reading author J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye. The novel went on to become a bestseller.
Green followed up his debut success with An Abundance of Katherines in 2006, and Paper Towns in 2008, both of which won various awards and were included on various best-selling lists. In 2008, he also wrote The Fault in Our Stars, a young adult novel that featured two protagonists with terminal cancer. The book was made into a major motion picture in 2014 and was very successful.
Green’s more recent publications include the novels Will Grayson, Will Grayson (2010), The Sequel (2012) and Turtles All the Way Down (2018) as well as the non-fiction book Let It Snow (2015). Additionally, Green has written for the Guardian, Sweet Magazine and the magazine Mental Floss.
Green and his brother, Hank, are also co-creators of the popular YouTube channel, VlogBrothers. The channel has over 2.6 million subscribers and posts new videos every Wednesday. The pair often share information and commentary about science, history, and literature, in addition to general musings.
John Green is also a co-host of two popular podcasts, Dear Hank & John and The Anthropocene Reviewed. Dear Hank & John is a comedic podcast which answers viewer questions in the style of an advice show, while The Anthropocene Reviewed is a more serious series exploring the concept of the Anthropocene, or the current geological age, through reviews of everyday objects.
