John P. Kotter

John P. Kotter is one of the most influential voices in business and leadership today. He is the Konosuke Matsushita Professor of Leadership, Emeritus at Harvard Business School and the author of 14 books, including the bestseller Leading Change. He is a noted expert in the field of leadership, organizational change, and the relationship between the two.

Kotter was born in 1946 in Brooklyn, New York, and attended the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, where he received his Master’s degree in Psychology. After graduating, he decided to pursue a career as a professor of leadership and management. At the Harvard Business School, he was the inaugural chairman of the Organizational Behavior area, paving the way for so many current leaders in the field.

Kotter is the author of 14 books, with the most popular being Leading Change, an iconic work within the field of management. The book outlines eight steps for successful change initiatives, helping organizations to better manage transformative initiatives. His other books include A Sense of Urgency, Corporate Culture and Performance, The Heart of Change, and his latest, That’s Not How We Do It Here! A Story about How Organizations Rise and Fall. He also has written award-winning case studies and articles that have expanded our understanding of the complexities surrounding leadership development and successful business management.

Kotter has received various awards, including the Academy of Management's Distinguished Professional Contributions Award, the International Leadership Association's Prominent Leader Award, the International Human Resource Management Award, the Bryson Award for Excellence in Executive Education, and Harvard Business Review's Best Management Thinker of the Year in 2008.

Kotter is also the founder of Kotter International, a consulting and training company that helps executives and organizations to implement his strategies, including the Eight Steps process seen in his book, Leading Change. Through his company, he has consulted with global companies such as Kraft, GE, Quaker Oats, Microsoft, and Ford.
