John Wooden
John Wooden was one of the best coaches and motivational speakers of all time. He was a Hall of Fame basketball coach for UCLA and a leader of many great teams. Wooden was known for his ability to motivate, lead and build team chemistry. He was also an author and wrote many books on basketball, leadership and life.
John Wooden was born on October 14, 1910 in Hall, Indiana. Growing up, he developed a love for sports, particularly basketball. His basketball career began in high school and he ultimately played at Purdue University, where he became the first 3-time All-American basketball player. After college, Wooden went on to coach in a variety of roles, first at Dayton High School, then at South Bend Central, and finally at Indiana State.
At Indiana State, Wooden built the basketball program from the ground up, eventually leading them to the 1952 National Championship game. It was at Indiana State where he developed his famous "Pyramid of Success" which was the cornerstone of his coaching philosophy. In 1948, he was hired as the head coach at UCLA.
Under Wooden's leadership, the UCLA Bruins would win 10 NCAA championships, 7 of them consecutively. He was also once named the most influential coach of the century by ESPN.
Wooden also wrote many books on basketball, leadership and life. His books focused on teaching people how to work together, overcome adversity and how to be successful both on and off the court. Wooden was greatly admired by those who worked with him and many people still use his coaching principles today.
