Jonathan Alter

Jonathan Alter is a journalist, author, political analyst, and commentator. He has a long and distinguished career that has spanned print media, television, and digital outlets. Alter has been a senior editor at Newsweek and an author and columnist for The Daily Beast and MSNBC.

Born in 1953 in Chicago, Alter attended Amherst College and then worked for the Boston Globe, where his work appeared on the paper's front page. Alter then joined the Newsweek team in 1983, eventually becoming one of its senior editors. During his time at the magazine, he wrote some of the most influential and groundbreaking political stories, including coverage of the Clinton impeachment and his "Inside the Bunker" piece about the 20th anniversary of the Kennedy assassination.

Alter has written several books, often taking a look at American political history. He wrote two biographies of former U.S. President Bill Clinton and one of the most comprehensive volumes on the Obama presidency this century, "The Center Holds: Obama and His Enemies".

Alter left Newsweek in 2012 and immediately become a senior writer and columnist for Bloomberg News. He has also become a regular commentator on various television programs, including MSNBC's Morning Joe and The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell. He has also appeared on The PBS NewsHour and 60 Minutes.

In addition to his print and television expertise, Alter has carved out a successful digital presence. He has written a bi-weekly column on The Daily Beast and a regular column on Politico. He has also become a respected Twitter presence with more than 130,000 followers. In addition, Alter has hosted a political podcast with an array of leading public figures from both sides of the aisle.

Alter continues to deliver timely and insightful political analysis that strives to bring order and sense to a world that often seems chaotic. He is known for always being ahead of the curve, predicting the rise of Donald Trump in 2015 and even predicting the current moment of partisanship and discontent.
