Julie Sherman

Julie Sherman is an American author and educator who writes thought-provoking psychological-based novels about complex characters who are often dealing with relationship issues, mental health issues, and spirituality. She is an established literary writer who has had her work featured in such publications as The Washington Post, Salon, The New York Times, and The Paris Review.

Born and raised in California, Sherman graduated with a degree in theater arts from UCLA and worked as a theater director and actor, before finally deciding to write full-time. She wrote her first book, Private Acts and Other Plays (1985), which is a collection of seven one-act plays that received a Lambda Literary Award nomination. Since then, Sherman has produced books in both fiction and non-fiction, most of which deal with identity, desire, and the inner workings of the human heart and mind.

Sherman's fiction works include In Her Skin (2008), based on a true story about a thirteen-year-old girl who escapes from an oppressive family to start a new life. She has also written several novels like Love's Compass (2004) and The Kindness of Strangers (2002) which explore issues of love, relationships, and identity. She is also the author of Dreams of Avalanche (2001), a collection of stories about individuals facing difficult life choices, as well as Life is a Vein (1999) which is a coming of age story filled with humor and grace.

In addition to her fiction works, Sherman also wrote the nonfiction books Seeing Through the Heart (1999) and A Compass of Love (2005). The former is a collection of essays that shed light on how seeing through the heart can help us understand and cope with life’s complexities. A Compass of Love is an exploration of relationships and love, and how following our vocation and listening to our hearts can lead us to a life of harmony and balance.

On top of her successful writing career, Sherman is also an adjunct professor at Rutgers University where she teaches courses in the humanities, foreign languages, and composition.
