Born in Boston in 1955, Kevin Maney attended college at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. After college, he pursued a career in journalism, first at United Press International and then at The Associated Press. He spent several years as an investigative reporter and then advanced to writing technology and business stories. In 1989, Maney was hired by The Wall Street Journal to cover the nascent tech bubble, of which he became one of the foremost reporters. Maney wrote extensively about the Silicon Valley elite until he left the paper in 1999.

Following his tenure at The Wall Street Journal, Maney pursued a career as a freelance journalist. He wrote more than 250 stories for publications such as The New York Times, Newsweek, Time, Fortune, and Wired. In 2003, Maney transitioned away from journalism to write his debut book, The Maverick and His Machine: Thomas Watson, Jr. and the Making of IBM.
